Vision Therapy as Awareness Training

How Vision Therapy Helps Improve Awareness, Visual Processing, and Connection

When most people think about vision therapy, they picture eye exercises. What I’ve come to learn through both personal experience and patient care is that vision therapy is really a form of awareness training.

At Eyes of New Mexico Family Optometry, we often talk about how vision is more than eyesight alone. True visual function involves the entire optical and neurological system working together to process and respond to the world around us.

Research has shown that the brain can learn not only through action, but also through observation and visualization. Studies involving activities like piano practice have demonstrated that mentally rehearsing a skill can activate many of the same brain pathways as physically performing it.

I experienced something similar during my early vision therapy training.

At the time, I felt disconnected, tense, and uncomfortable being seen. During seminars, I often chose to observe rather than participate. But as I watched others engage in vision therapy activities, I quietly imagined myself doing the same exercises.

That simple act of observation and awareness began changing how I experienced myself and my visual system.

Over time, I became more aware of my reactions, patterns, and the ways I moved through the world. Vision therapy helped me recognize that awareness itself can create change.

Three years later, I hardly recognize that earlier version of myself. What started with observation eventually became confidence, curiosity, and growth.

Vision Therapy Is More Than Eye Exercises

Vision therapy is not only about strengthening the eyes. It is about improving the connection between the eyes, brain, and body while supporting the efficiency of the visual and optical systems.

Through personalized optometric care and vision therapy, patients can strengthen both visual awareness and optical function.

For many patients, vision therapy may help support:

  • Visual processing
  • Attention and focus
  • Eye teaming
  • Reading comfort
  • Spatial awareness
  • Confidence and body awareness

Awareness is often the first step toward integration and change.

The more we notice how we are seeing, thinking, and responding, the more opportunities we create for growth and healing.

Vision therapy helps patients improve not only visual awareness, but also the efficiency of the optical and neurological systems that support learning, movement, and everyday life.

At Eyes of New Mexico Family Optometry, our goal is to help patients experience vision as something deeper than clarity alone — a more connected and comfortable way of engaging with the world.
