Are Contact Lenses the Right Choice for You?

Caring for your eyes and protecting your eyesight is an essential part of your overall health. If you are having vision problems, you’ll need to find a good eye doctor. If you live in the Albuquerque, NM, area, and you’re looking for an optometrist near you, we encourage you to visit us here at Eyes of NM. Our staff has been caring for area clients since 2017.

Choosing the Right Contact Lenses

The journey to better eyesight begins with an eye exam performed by an optometrist. After the exam, one of our optometrists will be able to determine whether you need visual correction with eyeglasses or contact lenses. Many clients prefer to use contact lenses for appearance’s sake. According to Verywell Health, most people who need visual correction can wear contact lenses.

During a contact lens fitting, our optometrist will determine whether or not your eyes are healthy enough to use contacts. The doctor will then measure your eyes with specialized instruments, as the lenses must fit precisely over the surface of your eyes. During the visit, the eye doctor will show you the correct way to insert and remove contact lenses, which will take expertise and practice. They will also explain how to care for contact lenses to prevent an eye infection.

Types of Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are provided as either soft lenses or rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses. Soft lenses are thin, and most users report they are comfortable to wear. Soft lenses are made from water and polymers of silicone and hydrogel. Some soft lenses are available as disposable lenses which are worn for a day and then discarded.

The RGP lenses are made of rigid plastic and provide clearer vision. They can correct most visual problems and last longer than soft lenses. Always wash your hands before touching your contact lenses. Clean them with contact lens solution, according to the frequency your eye doctor recommends.
